Cynical political point scoring will not protect our children

Protecting children from harm is a fundamental and absolute priority of the Scottish Government.

The sensitive topic of child abuse is one that normally would never be used for political gain. It is an area all those across politics can agree is abhorrent and needs constant action and vigilance and a united front.

However, in the last week there have been those trying to use it for cynical or political point scoring, dismissing the valuable and important work that is already underway to protect children in Scotland from harm right now.

Disagreement in how we drive forward change in legislation is part of the democratic process. But some of the shocking and hateful comments that have been prevalent online following the passing of the Victims, Witnesses and Justice Reform Bill on September 17 are completely unacceptable.

It is fundamental to our democracy that members of Parliament are able to perform their duties safely, without fear of threats or online abuse to them and their family. Those comments have been in relation to one aspect of the huge landmark bill.

Furthermore the misrepresentation by some political parties, in relation to that one aspect of the Bill, undermines the collective efforts already ongoing........
