Community energy must be the next step in the renewables revolution
There is mounting scepticism and alarm at the impact of green, clean energy, and no sign of a slowdown. But an apparently-ceaseless series of applications for wind farms, battery storage facilities, hydro and transmission infrastructure is currently reaching, for some, a tipping point.
Right now, applications are meeting increasing opposition. The online group Not a Just Transition – Opposed to the Industrialisation of Rural Scotland is gaining members and followers by the day. In Beauly and Kiltarlity, a feisty local campaign is already under way in response to SSEN Transmission’s planning application for a 400kV substation and converter station project at Fanellan. South of Inverness, Strathnairn Energy Awareness is stepping up opposition to 200-metre-tall turbines in its area. There are other local campaigns. And a leading opposition councillor in Caithness, Matthew Reiss, has urged a pause in larger renewables........
