How giving every school child a week in the wilderness can transform their lives

Conservative MSP Liz Smith wants to change the law to ensure all children have the chance to experience five days of residential outdoor education during their time at school.

The MSP’s Schools (Residential Outdoor Education) (Scotland) Bill passed its Stage 1 Debate in Holyrood this week and she says the proposed new legislation aims to ensure every school pupil can benefit from outdoors education could be "transformative" for youngsters.

Here she tells The Herald why it matters to her and the difference it could make to school children.

Since l was at school - now many years ago - l have been very privileged to spend a great deal of my leisure time in the Scottish outdoors. Happily, some of my best days were at the Outward Bound centre at Loch Eil, thanks not only to the stunning scenery set against the majesty of Ben Nevis, but because of the outstanding staff and their dedication to inspiring young people.
