I live in East Ren: Glasgow's plan to make us pay to use Clyde Tunnel will backfire
Why Glasgow City Council’s plans to impose a Clyde Tunnel Toll charge is not only unfair, but potentially detrimental to the city’s commerce, says Kulsum Shabbir
The steady, drawn-out death of Glasgow’s high street is not news to any of us. Many Glaswegians can testify to having witnessed its demise, with Sauchiehall Street beginning to resemble a ghost town. It’s surprising then, that Glasgow City Council seem to be eager to pin the nail in its coffin with its proposal to introduce a new congestion charge, as well as a Clyde Tunnel Toll for drivers entering into the city.
Scottish high street vacancy rates have been worsening year by year. Although the council has dropped £5.7m redeveloping Sauchiehall Street, it's unlikely this will be enough of a draw for residents of neighbouring councils to pay the charge to enter the city – especially with shopping centres outside of the city centre, such as Silverburn, recently introducing newer, more popular chain stores such as Bershka, Pull & Bear, H Beauty, Black Sheep........
