For Women Scotland is right - SNP must stop backsliding on Supreme Court judgment

For Women Scotland will be protesting outside Holyrood on Thursday about what they say is the Scottish Government's refusal to follow the Supreme Court judgment on single sex spaces. Here, Kevin McKenna argues the SNP is pursuing an agenda which diminishes the human rights of women and girls

So, let’s consider what is now held to be ‘progressive’ in modern Scotland. And then let’s consider how, as a nation we reached this place where a government identifying as leftish and liberal is actively pursuing an agenda which diminishes the basic human rights of women and girls.

And then let’s you and I reflect on something else that has come to pass in Scotland. Many women with lived experience of fighting sex discrimination and homophobia in the workplace and in our civic institutions are now routinely defamed as ‘far-right’ and ‘bigoted’. This abuse is often hurled at them by people in the pay of the government who have never had to endure an atom of the prejudice and violent threat these women had to face down in doing so.

Some of these women will try to make their voices heard once more at Holyrood on Thursday morning. They intend to ask the Scottish Government why it has been reluctant to implement the Supreme Court judgment that Sex in the 2010 Equality is what a person is assigned at birth.

I use the words “try to” advisedly. On previous occasions when feminists have gathered outside Holyrood or in other public squares to defend single-sex spaces they have been routinely shouted down and chastised by trans rights activists with a ferocity that must be seen and heard before it can adequately be described.
