Why owner of family firm making Scottish delicacy is shining example for bosses

There was one particularly striking point, among many, in the responses of the owner of an award-winning Scottish family business which makes a culinary delicacy celebrated on social media by Scottish footballer "Super" John McGinn, writes Business Editor Ian McConnell.

There were quite a few striking things in the responses of the owner of an award-winning Scottish family business to my questions, in an interview published this week.

This was not surprising.

After all, the business makes a Scottish culinary delight celebrated by football star "Super" John McGinn in November 2019 the day after Scotland beat Kazakhstan 3-1 in the UEFA Euro qualifiers in a game in which he scored two goals. Back then, he tweeted a picture of himself in his number eight Scotland shirt with arms aloft celebrating a goal and declared: “When ye get a pizza crunch after the game.”

Anne Marie Cairney, owner of The Victor Pizza Co. Ltd, light-heartedly described her company’s “Chippy Pizza” as “infamous”.

And there were plenty of other remarkable points in the interview, which was surely to be expected given not only the company’s product range and personality of its owner but also the success of Victor Pizza, which saw it recognised in The Herald’s 2025 Scottish Family Business Awards. The company won the Scottish Family Business of the Year (Small/ Medium) category in these awards in November.

Ms Cairney highlighted Victor Pizza’s £2.5 million investment in and relocation to a new 27,000 sq ft purpose-built factory in Coatbridge, from Lambhill in Glasgow.

She said: “With support from Scottish Enterprise - including a £715,000 grant - we’re creating a modern, fit-for-purpose facility that will allow the next generation, our three children, to double or even treble turnover over the next five years.”

This is an impressive growth ambition for the company, which manufactures pizza for schools, colleges, and universities as well as making the “Chippy Pizza”, which Ms Cairney described as “a real Scottish classic”.
