Trump voiced support for UK farmers - he needs to turn his attention to his own
During his recent visit to the UK, US President Donald Trump voiced strong support for British farmers, calling them ‘hardworking’ and ‘passionate’ people who ‘love their way of life’.
But across the Atlantic, the reality for many American farmers tells a far more troubling story. One marked by mounting debt, declining prices, labour shortages and growing instability in the agricultural sector.
“They love their way of life, and they love that dirt,” Trump said, in response to a question on the importance of farming. “They don’t know how to do anything else, but they don’t want to do anything else.”
While such sentiments may have drawn polite applause on British soil, they ring hollow when held up against the backdrop of a deepening farm crisis in the United States, a crisis that some say echoes the devastating rural collapse of the 1980s.
