Joanna Cherry KC: 'This ruling is a victory for grassroots activism'
Today's Supreme Court judgment is a huge vindication for the feminist and lesbian rights campaigners who fought the Scottish Government for years to establish that the rights of women and lesbians should not have to play second fiddle to the rights of men who wish to identify as women.
It is also a victory for grass roots activism because self-funding feminist and lesbian groups have fought the might of the state and won.
As a lesbian feminist of longstanding, I am proud to have supported For Women Scotland throughout this struggle. As a trustee of the LGB Alliance, the only charity that campaigns solely for LGB rights in the United Kingdom, I am proud that we intervened in this case together with Scottish Lesbians and the Lesbian Project. Our concerns about protecting the ability of lesbians to have lesbian only spaces and associations were central to the court's reasoning.
It is important to emphasise that this judgment is not about rolling back trans rights. What it is about is protecting single sex spaces, the rights of women to dignity, privacy and safety and the rights of lesbians to freedom of association.
