Lessons from a Visit to South Korea

South Korea offers a compelling model of how culture, governance and economic vision can converge to create a highly functional and inclusive society. During my recent visit, four aspects stood out distinctly, each carrying important lessons for countries like India, especially in the context of development policy and social transformation.

1. Culture as the Foundation of GovernanceOne of the most striking features of South Korean society is the quiet discipline and humility of its people. Despite being among the world’s most advanced economies, everyday interactions are marked by modesty rather than assertion. This is complemented by a deeply embedded civic ethic.Public spaces are treated with care, rules are followed with minimal enforcement and there is a shared understanding of collective responsibility. Whether in orderly public behavior, adherence to traffic norms or the absence of litter, these practices reflect internalized social values rather than external compulsion.
