Bilateral trade between Russia and Ghana has grown significantly, surpassing US$800 million, with Russia supplying petroleum products, fertilizers, and grains while both sides explore local-currency settlement options.

Discussions focus on deeper cooperation in mining and mineral processing, peaceful nuclear energy, oil and gas, agriculture, education (including doubled scholarships), and technology transfer.

The two countries signed a visa-waiver agreement for diplomatic and service passport holders and plan further work through the Russia-Ghana Intergovernmental Commission, with Ghana’s president expected at the October 2026 Russia-Africa Summit.

Russia’s economic influence and investment collaboration with Ghana have entered a new phase, as Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Russia’s Sergey Lavrov, in their high-level discussions mid-August 2026, pledged to take advantage of the existing opportunities in both countries. Russia, in particular, has re-positioned itself, during the diplomatic talks, for a deeper economic cooperation and to explore opportunities in energy, agriculture, geological exploration and mineral development, and further to raise prospects for new investment and promote bilateral trade.
