The West Asia region remains highly volatile, with fragile US-Iran and Israel-Lebanon agreements undermined by renewed drone/missile attacks and ongoing threats, despite some diplomatic efforts.

Israel shows resilience amid war — continuing urban construction and strict security measures — while grappling with trauma from the October 7, 2023 Nova attack, high living costs, and skepticism about peace prospects.

Broader regional shifts include Iran’s retained nuclear potential, China’s support for Iran, new alliances (e.g., PEST, TIQ), stalled Saudi Vision 2030, strained GCC cohesion, and setbacks to the Abraham Accords and India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC), with the author suggesting pragmatic engagement with Iran may be needed.

The war in West Asia ricochets between a state of tenuous ceasefire and aggressive bombing. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that was signed between the U.S. and Iran and the framework agreement signed between Israel and Lebanon under the umbrella of the U.S. were baby steps taken to bring some semblance of normalcy in the region, but the reality overwhelmed even those tentative efforts. The fragility of the situation can be gauged from the fact that firing of drones and missiles took place on June 26, 2026, after the framework agreement was signed. Threats and counter-threats have become the norm.

A recent visit to Israel shows the damage but also allows for a revisiting of the original attack in Nova on October 7, 2023, that led to the retaliation and subsequent escalation of the conflict that has had a global impact.

Surprisingly, despite the war, Israel continues to build its cities. There is an enormous amount of new residential construction in Tel Aviv, with the skyline full of cranes, and the strict security measures are very visible. Given Israel’s proximity to countries that are inimical to its existence, these measures are necessary.

The October 7 incident, which the al-Qassam brigades launched during a concert in Nova, which is close to the Gaza border, has left a deep scar on the Israeli psyche. It was a turning point in the relations between Israel and other countries in West Asia. The actions that Israel took after........
