Column: This ain't hot!
Well, let's just say it's a little warmer than usual, but this is Arkansas, and it is summer. I'm a little concerned about what August will bring. OK? Yes, and I will agree this is not my favorite weather.
Actually, as a very young boy, I can remember when we only had a big attic fan to pull in cooler air at night. Only when my dad started working shift work, which meant he worked nights and therefore had to sleep during the day, did we buy our first small bedroom air conditioner. As a barefoot, shirtless young boy, I was unaware of air conditioning, and my way to combat the heat was to wear as little clothing as possible, no shoes, and swim in anything with water in it.
After Vertis and I married, I was hired by Exxon, and we moved to Texas, the air-conditioning capital of the world. Only then did we enjoy a full air-conditioning experience. In Texas, virtually every enclosed space is air-conditioned, and I would expect one day they will build a dome to cover the state, and then the entire state of Texas will be fully air-conditioned. Ha! Ha!
When I was transferred to Benghazi, Libya, which is in Africa on the Mediterranean coast, virtually nothing was air-conditioned. But a friend had recommended we take a large,........
