GUNTER: City compost strategy oozes incompetence

City administration is flying blind about what to do with all that oozy, gooey gunk that comes out of the little green compost bucket under your sink.

The current “digestion facility” was expected to process 68,000 tonnes of waste annually by now. Most years it can only handle about 44,000. In 2027, when apartments and condos are added to the city’s three-stream (garbage, recycling and compost) collection system, the amount of organic waste is expected to rise to 120,000 tonnes or more.

If the digester is inadequate now, just imagine how insufficient it will be three years from now.

To handle the current overflow, the city has contracted with private companies to process the excess.

Here’s a novel idea: Why not have private contractors handle all of the organic stream?

And if private contractors don’t want all the organics because there are insufficient customers for the compost and other byproducts, maybe the city could take the hint that there just isn’t enough demand for the organics it........
