Norwich Magistrates’ Court heard the 31-year-old had initially falsely claimed to have a room booked at the hotel before saying he was being followed by two men.

He had attempted to get behind the reception desk before briefly pulling the weapon out from his waistband, said prosecutors.

When police were called, he had fled but later returned without the machete.
