Adnams losses continue but turnaround plan has started, says interim chair

Losses continue for the company - which posted a pre-tax loss of £2.8m for last year compared to £4.1m in 2023 - as it implements its turnaround plan under fresh leadership.

Most parts of the business failed to meet budget expectations last year and it is continuing to sell off non-core assets to stem the losses, it said in its annual report.

The UK hospitality industry is facing a big increase in its costs burden - with the October Budget adding further to its woes.

Echoing Bury St Edmunds pubs and brewing company Greene King's chief executive Nick Mackenzie after it posted a £147m loss, Adnams interim chairman Simon Townsend said his business continued to face challenges this year.

These included "unreliable consumer confidence, questionable economic growth and the imminent impact of increases in employment costs through employers' National Insurance contributions and the National Minimum Wage, plus the introduction of substantial additional taxes through the Extended Producer Responsibility levy".
