Adnams cuts losses but sales slide in 'challenging' market

The Southwold-based brewer and hospitality group recorded a half-year loss before tax of £1.465m (unaudited) to June 30, 2025, compared to £2,766m (audited) over the same period last year.

The group says sales is the first six months were down 5.7% on the previous year and stood at £30.1m after a "very challenging" start to the year.

But they did exceed the market - with off-trade sales to supermarkets 2% above the industry average during the first six months of the year, it said.

On-trade sales grew by 3.3% in June compared to an 8.5% market decline, it added.

At the same time - as reported at its annual general meeting - the company expects to face an extra £2m in costs this year as a result of new government policy.

These relate to rises in the National Living Wage, employers' National Insurance Contribution and the introduction of an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme requiring producers to pay for the costs of recycling consumer packaging.
