'We want to unite not divide' - Flaggers speak out after days of tense clashes

Members of the group have fixed Union Jacks and St George Crosses to lampposts along Dereham Road and parts of the inner ring road this week.

Their activities have sparked confrontations with some locals who say the flags are intimidating and have tried to remove some of them.

But in a statement, the group - who say they have hoisted around 250 banners - said their intentions were to be "peaceful and respectful".

A spokesman for the group - who asked not to be identified - said: "We are ordinary, concerned people - families, neighbours, friends - not the 'far right” or 'hooligans” that some labels suggest.

"We reject those stereotypes and simply ask to be listened to and treated fairly.

"We are proud of our national symbols, such as the St George’s Cross and the Union Jack, which we see as uniting rather than dividing.
