Great Yarmouth Borough Council has welcomed National Lottery players for a tour inside the Winter Gardens.

A Facebook post from Great Yarmouth Borough Council said: "As part of National Lottery Open Week, were were delighted to welcome National Lottery players for exclusive behind-the-scenes tours of the Winter Gardens.

"Visitors were given a special look at the restoration work currently taking place, offering a chance to see the progress being made to bring this iconic building back to life.

"From the intricate architecture to the careful conservation work happening throughout the site, it was fantastic to share the journey with those who help make projects like this possible.

"The restoration of the Winter Gardens has been made possible thanks to National Lottery players, alongside support from Historic England and the Heritage Fund - helping to bring this much-loved seaside landmark back to life for future generations."

Contractors have been working on its restoration since September last year, when hoardings were installed around the site.

In January, work inside the Grade II listed venue began with work taking place on the specialist piling and substructure improvements.

Work at the site will see the restoration of its original features, including cast and wrought ironwork.

Designs for the Winter Gardens - the UK's last surviving Victorian glasshouse on a seaside promenade - include new glazing, heating and cooling systems, significant planting, rainwater harvesting, irrigation, low energy and decarbonisation.

Located next to Wellington Pier, it is set to become a 'People's Palace', with cafés and community spaces when it reopens in 2028.

Over the decades, it has been used for roller skating, ballroom dancing, an amusement arcade and a variety of other entertainment.
