Town's highest honour bestowed on 'outstanding' individuals

Glowing praise was bestowed on historians, Ivan Bunn and David Butcher, at a special civic ceremony in Lowestoft.

The former teachers were presented with the Freedom of the Town awards by the Mayor of Lowestoft councillor Nasima Begum, on Friday afternoon at Sparrows Nest Gardens.

The Honorary Freedom of the Town award is the highest civic honour that Lowestoft Town Council can bestow.

The turnout united in the popular park to see the honours conferred on the duo, who were hailed for bringing the area's history to life.

Having dedicated many decades to preserving, sharing and enriching Lowestoft’s history, both Mr Bunn and Mr Butcher have helped generations better understand the town’s heritage and identity.

Mrs Begum said: "It is a great honour to be here this afternoon as we celebrate two individuals whose dedication and commitment have enriched the life and history of our town.

"Today we recognise two people whose work over many years has helped preserve, explain and share the story of Lowestoft."
