Village battles BT to keep its WORKING phone box... which makes nine calls a year

But the pips may soon be sounding for the kiosk in the tiny village of Sharrington, near Holt.

BT wants to disconnect the box - one of only a handful of its kind left in the county.

It says only nine people used it in 2024 with the most recent call made in December.

Locals, however, are determined not to see it disconnected without a fight.

They have mobilised Brinton and Sharrington parish council and Steffan Aquarone, the Lib Dem MP for North Norfolk, with both coming out in support of their campaign not just to ensure the kiosk remains in the village but that the phone inside keeps on working.

They claim some elderly locals still rely on it and that because mobile phone coverage can be unreliable in north Norfolk, it is a useful lifeline for ramblers who pass through the village on its many footpaths.

A parish council spokeswoman said: "We want a functioning phone and a phone box.

"Norfolk is bad for phone signal and I think there are people in the village who do not have mobile phones."
