A group of campaigners in North Walsham are pressuring Norfolk County Council to improve safety as they say roadworks have led to unofficial "dangerous" diversions on the west side of the town being used by frustrated motorists.

A £750,000 project at the junction of Norwich and Yarmouth Roads on the town's bypass to improve safety and getting about the the town started on Monday, January 6.

However, the Save Our Streets group says the council’s lack of promotion and signage for an official diversion along Old Yarmouth Road is inadequate.

They say it has resulted in narrow pavement-less roads used as rat runs, with drivers regularly flouting 20 mph limits.

The group says pedestrians have been clipped by wing mirrors and larger vehicles and they find it nearly impossible to walk down streets.

Norfolk County Council says the works, due to last six months, will improve travel and road safety in the town and it has already acted on complaints about diversion signs.
