A Facebook post on Monday warned Dereham locals to stay away from the stream near Gorse Close in the Scarning Water Meadows after a “rainbow” substance with an “extremely strong smell of petrol” was noticed in the water.

The incident was reported to the Environment Agency, which sent an officer to investigate.
