Council denies claims it desecrated graves as memorial stones moved
Dereham Town Council came under fire in a community Facebook group after it was accused of ‘devastating graves’ at East Dereham Cemetery.
The post, which showed memorial stones piled at the sides of the site, drew more than 200 reactions and 70 comments.
But the council says they were not removed from graves.
It said they had been moved as part of work on a brick shed in the cemetery and they had been left untouched since the 1970s and 1980s when they were placed by the structure.
The council has also apologised that the post "resulted in so much alarm and upset". Stones were pictured strewn across the site (Image: Bill Raper)
