While generally made up from a combination of spices and dried fruits, such as currants or raisins, they can also be topped or filled with strawberries and cream and some are now even battered.
Traditionally eaten on Good Friday the humble bun is believed to have originated in England during the 14th century, with the cross symbolising the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

To find out the best of the bunch our more-than-willing taste testers, Emily and Joe, tried a range of hot cross buns to suit all budgets to find the tastiest in Norwich.
The pair carried out the test blind, not knowing which buns were from where or how much each cost.
