The victim, named as Terry, who lived with partner Jenny Holmwood, has been described by those who live in Layer Close, in Bowthorpe, as “more of a friend than a neighbour”.

It is believed a man in his 20s, who has been arrested, was a lodger at the house.

One neighbour said that over the years, Ms Holmwood, 75, hosted lodgers, sometimes young men, sometimes old.

He said: "One became her boyfriend, and one she ended up marrying

“Eight or nine years ago, a lodger at the time told me that there was always arguing.

“I suspect the lodgers were a way of making ends meet.

"I’m sick to my stomach.........
