Work flattening Anglia Square and its multi-storey car park to make way for 1,100 homes could take a year to complete.

The site is being bulldozed down by Eastern Demolition, with the help of DSM Contractors, as part of a £350m scheme led by Norwich City Council.

The demolition began in November and was due to take six months, paving the way for construction to begin in spring 2026.

But despite council bosses stating the demolition is on track to finish in time, Wayne Stuart, who has been videoing the development, has been told otherwise.

He said: "A contractor on-site told me they believe it will take a whole year to flatten and clear the area.

"The front got ripped down first.

"They took out the middle section of the building and then began to knock down the outside.

"Next week, they are taking the roof off the cinema.

"The demolition of the multi-storey car park has reached the halfway point.

"He knows the site manager, and I have been permitted to fly the drone over the site as long as I am standing on public land.

"I believe I am the only person who is allowed to."

Sovereign House, which was once home to Her Majesty's Stationery Office, is also being knocked down as part of the project.

A spokesman from Norwich City Council said: “We are on track to demolish buildings as part of our redevelopment of Anglia Square this spring.”

Norwich City Council bought the site in December 2024 through a £34m grant from Homes England, which is helping to fund the project.

A variety of retail, office and leisure spaces with landscaped gardens will be created as part of the scheme.
