Green councillor facing new claims of breathtaking hypocrisy over mouldy rental home

But councillor Liam Calvert has been accused of breathtaking hypocrisy by one of his own former tenants, who says the state of the house she rented from him was "horrific".

Morrighan Humpleby rented the property in Hotblack Road from Mr Calvert between 2021 and 2023, and reported issues with black mould and damp to him on "countless" occasions without success.

Mr Calvert has previously accused City Hall of "failing" its social housing tenants and has acted as an advocate for those who have been forced to live in homes riddled with damp and mould.

He is now facing calls to step down as a councillor, with the Labour figures accusing him of "cavalier disregard". They said photographs from his property were "truly shocking" and "represented some of the very worst standards in private sector housing".

Mr Calvert was first accused of hypocrisy earlier this month after a neighbour complained that the Hotblack Road property is in dire need of roof repairs and has issues with damp which has affected her home.

Following that story, Ms Humpleby came forward to claim that the problems with Mr Calvert's property were even more extensive and that he had done little to address them.

Mr Calvert, who rents out a handful of properties, previously claimed he had received "no complaints" about serious damp and mould from any current or former tenants in Hotblack Road.

Following her allegations, he said: "Subsequent tenants did not report the same issues."

The property was a family home for Mr Calvert, his wife and twin sons until they moved out around seven years ago.

He now lets it out to a couple who pay around £900 a month in rent. They have........
