Norwich's Theatre Royal was packed, with many visibly moved by the end of the almost three-hour journey from rural Devon to the battlefields of the First World War – including me and my 10-year-old son.

On a quiet stage a foal named Joey, brought to life through the jaw-dropping work of the award-winning Handspring Puppet Company, frames the heart of this tale which is ultimately about a boy’s bond with his horse.
