'Lucky' civil servant who worked during Winter of Discontent celebrates milestone
Miriam Croxen, who lives at the Warren care home, Sprowston, marked the milestone with a champagne reception attended by friends, relatives, staff and fellow residents.
Born in 1926, Miriam grew up in North Walsham, where she lived with her brother. She later moved to Surrey and began working as a civil servant.

Between 1976 and 1979 she served as a secretary in the government of prime minister James Callaghan.
Her time in government coincided with a period of significant political and economic challenges, as ministers sought to tackle industrial disputes and high unemployment during the Winter of Discontent.
After leaving the civil service, Miriam worked for a packaging company before retiring at the age of 63.
Four years later she returned to north Norfolk, settling in Cromer.

During this time she became a friend of Norwich Theatre Royal, where she enjoyed attending performances, particularly classical music, opera and ballet.
She also spent many hours playing bridge and pursuing a variety of other pastimes.
To celebrate her 100th birthday, Miriam received a congratulatory telegram from the King.
Guests at the care home celebration also enjoyed a special birthday cake made by the home’s chef, Afua.

Speaking about reaching the milestone, Miriam said: “I have no secret to share. I have just been very lucky in life.”
Although her brother died six years ago, she remains close to her family, including her nieces Fiona and Rebecca. Fiona was able to attend the celebration.
She said: “Miriam is and has been a fantastic aunt to me and a friend to so many over the past hundred years, and it’s wonderful to be with her on this very special day to say just how proud she makes us feel.”
Miriam was also joined by lifelong friends who enjoyed the celebration.
The Warren care home is run by Barchester Healthcare.
