Norfolk's 'rollercoaster royalist' back in the spotlight... after 300 years
Now, a portrait of Sir Roger L'Estrange, a Norfolk nobleman and royalist who enjoyed a rollercoaster career during the tumultuous years of the Civil War and the Restoration, has seen him rise to prominence once more.
The work, by German-born painter Godrey Kneller - the leading portraitist of the age - has been put up for sale by a member of the extended L'Estrange family.
Born at the family seat of Old Hunstanton, Sir Roger (1616 - 1704) was a member of a staunchly monarchist family.
