New fears 10-bed 'party house' with plunge pool will wipe out town's WI

London-based architect Tom Leahy has moved the pool that was included when plans to convert the former youth hostel in Wells were agreed despite a flood of objections last year.

It has now been turned 90 degrees and blocks off an area previously used for parking and turning by visitors to the Women's Institute Hall behind the hostel on Church Plain.

A planter, decking, barbecue and pizza oven are also being installed at the rear of the building, while Mr Leahy has submitted a retrospective planning application for the changes.

The alterations leave no space to park or turn around outside the hall, where visitors were allowed to do so by the hostel's previous owner.

Wells WI said it "strongly objected" to the changes and is demanding unapproved alterations are removed.

In a letter to the council, it said they would further restrict access to the WI Hall both for members and the emergency services.

"The Wells WI is a vital community organisation providing the town with support for its members, many of whom are elderly," it continues.
