Photo gallery: Crowds gather for century-old greasy pole challenge

The sun was out and spirits were high as families gathered along the quayside to cheer on the brave souls tackling the famous greasy pole yesterday.

Dating back to 1873, the challenge sees competitors attempt to walk, run or slide their way across a 30ft wooden telegraph pole slathered in grease and suspended above the water.

Back in the day, a hog was the prize. These days, a trophy and a dunking are the main rewards.
