Greenyard Frozen UK is one of the largest suppliers of British-grown produce to the UK frozen market. Most of its crops (80%) are grown intensively within 30 miles of its factories in King’s Lynn, Norfolk and Boston, Lincolnshire.

Sustainability is a personal passion of Greenyard’s founder Hein Deprez, who launched the business in 1983. His realisation that waste was generated by not selling all product to the fresh market led to the development of the prepared and frozen elements of the business, whereby none of the raw product is wasted.

Greenyard Frozen UK is led by general manager Brendon Legrove, who embraces Hein’s vision of growing a business which values the environment.

The judges praised the firm’s “sustained, transformative focus on long-term energy and water reduction in frozen produce processing”.

They highlighted “key innovations” such as the advanced anaerobic wastewater treatment plant at King’s Lynn, which has achieved a 97% reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD).

The business “exemplifies best practice, inspiring the wider frozen food industry to adopt scalable, impactful sustainability models for lasting environmental benefits,” the judges added.

Hayley Pick from Greenyard Frozen UK said: “I’m lost for words. We hope this award shows that by working together you can create an impact that you might not realise.”

Jason Ash, also from Greenyard Frozen UK, added: “To be recognised by an independent individual helps elevate what we’re doing, and it’s fantastic to win.”
