What’s Going on With Texas’s Democratic-Primary Mess?
The Texas Senate race is one of the marquee contests of the 2026 election cycle, featuring fiercely competitive primaries on both sides of the aisle in a state where Democrats believe they may finally have an opening after decades of statewide losses. The Democratic race pits state representative James Talarico, who has made his form of religious liberalism central to his campaign, and Representative Jasmine Crockett, an outspoken and high-profile Trump critic positioning herself as a challenger of the status quo. Now, that contest has suddenly become personal, after an allegation that Talarico made a racially insensitive remark about former representative Colin Allred, his ex-competitor in the race. The resulting intraparty conflict, which threatens to damage both candidates, comes at an otherwise auspicious time: Democrats secured a stunning special-election victory in the state legislature this week, winning a state Senate seat in a deeply conservative district. Things kicked off when Morgan Thompson, a Dallas-based content creator focused on Texas politics, recounted a story to her more than 185,000 TikTok followers regarding an off-the-record meeting she had with Talarico about the Democratic primary on January 12. Thompson claimed that during their conversation, Talarico made an offensive comment comparing Crockett to Allred, a former representative whom Talarico was initially running against. (Allred, who dropped his bid after Crockett entered the race, was also Texas’s Democratic Senate nominee in 2024, losing to Ted Cruz, and is now running for Congress again.)
“Talarico told me that he signed up to run against a mediocre Black man, not a formidable and intelligent Black woman,” Thompson said in a video posted on Sunday.
