George Santos Cries As He’s Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison

George Santos was sentenced on Friday to more than seven years in prison in what is the culmination of one of the wildest political scandals in memory.

The disgraced former congressman sobbed as Judge Joanna Seybert handed down his sentence, which includes two years supervised release, in a Long Island federal courtroom. “I offer my deepest apologies,” he said, according to the Associated Press. “I cannot rewrite the past, but I can control the road ahead.”

Santos, 36, pleaded guilty to counts of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft last summer. Prosecutors were granted the 87-month-long sentence they sought for the man they called a “pathological liar and fraudster.” He has been ordered to surrender by July 25.

In 2022, Santos was largely unknown when he ran for a congressional seat covering parts of Queens and Long Island that was left open by Democrat
