The growing globalisation and diversity of our planet inevitably casts the spotlight on the issues of nationalism, ethnic minorities and unique local cultures. These issues used to be restricted to the effects of colonialism on third world countries. Nowadays, no one seems to stay put and everyone is turning up at everyone else’s door with a range of goals: to find refuge or business opportunities, to join relatives or exploit resources, to claim handouts or establish trade ties, to find an amenable climate or flee the impact of climate change. Meanwhile, some people are trafficked to other countries, others are there to avoid taxes, and no doubt the odd castaway still gets washed up on a foreign beach never to leave.

Clearly, all of this movement – on a scale never before seen – will have a serious........
