Farkas: It's time to intensify the battle against hate-motivated crime and antisemitism

We live in the most dangerous time to be a Jew since the Holocaust.

We should be horrified that this is true in Canada.

On Sept. 20, Jewish Canadians gathered at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ont., for Yom Kippur. A gunman attacked. An officer protecting the synagogue was shot multiple times while confronting the attacker. Police stopped him from getting inside.

Jews went to pray on their holiest day and needed police officers standing guard.

We cannot normalize this in Canada in 2026.

Calgary will not wait until someone attacks one of our synagogues before we get serious. We can and must lead the country in protecting Jewish people and confronting antisemitism.

That requires admitting our current approach is failing. We cannot issue another statement about fighting hate, put every form of hatred under one umbrella, and call the job done. That’s because antisemitism is not generic racism.

It has thousands of years........
