Braid: Incumbent mayors are hard to beat but Gondek may end the trend
There’s rarely been such a fierce effort by political enemies to topple a mayor.
Jyoti Gondek takes it on the chin every day, for everything from the climate emergency to allegations that she spent public money to spruce up her image.
But for all her troubles, Gondek has a chance of winning.
It’s very difficult to unseat an incumbent Calgary mayor.
Name recognition is key. Gondek has far more of that priceless asset than any other candidate, including Jeromy Farkas, her main opponent last time.
There’s a strong counter-case from Gondek’s foes that this election is different because her name is powerfully negative. Voting day, Oct. 20, may prove them correct.
