Nelson: Separatists plan revenge after Smith turns their dreams to dust
Disgruntled separatists among Alberta’s Conservatives realize ditching Premier Danielle Smith would be political suicide. They’ll still try.
Taking down the premier in retaliation for what they see as her betrayal of their sacred cause will inevitably splinter the UCP. That will almost certainly lead to an election and a new government, likely one led by the NDP under Naheed Nenshi.
So what. That’s just collateral damage. It’s akin to losing the last game of the regular season when you were eliminated from making the playoffs back in mid-March. To ardent separatists, the UCP is simply a vessel to ferry them to the promised land of an independent Alberta.
