How Great Koala park can be a win for environment and local workers

If you want a neat example of how an environmental decision can beautifully dovetail with the hard reality of economics, look no further than the Minns government’s declaration of the Great Koala National Park on the state’s North Coast.

As the Herald’s environment reporter Caitlin Fitzsimmons revealed on Sunday, after 10 years of promises (including eight years in opposition), the Minns government finally announced the proposed boundaries of its new park, triggering a halt to logging in 176,000 hectares of state forest near Coffs Harbour.

The government said it would provide an additional $60 million for the National Parks and Wildlife Service to establish the park, on top of $80 million allocated in 2023, as well as $6 million to boost tourism.

The state forests contain nearly 12,000 koalas and 36,000 greater gliders,........
