Putin and Trump hold key phone call on ceasefire and relations

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump engaged in a phone conversation on March 18, 2025, lasting over two hours. The discussion covered key geopolitical issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, a proposed 30-day ceasefire, a prisoner exchange, and maritime security. The call marked a notable step in efforts to normalize US-Russia relations, with both leaders expressing interest in continuing dialogue on global security, economic cooperation, and even cultural exchanges such as NHL-KHL hockey matches.

According to the Kremlin’s official summary, President Putin reiterated his commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and expressed readiness to work closely with the United States on a comprehensive settlement. Putin emphasized that any agreement must be long-term and sustainable, addressing the root causes of the crisis while taking Russia’s legitimate security interests into account.

Trump proposed a 30-day ceasefire as an immediate measure to de-escalate hostilities. The Kremlin’s statement highlighted Russia’s concerns about the practical implementation of the ceasefire, particularly regarding its enforcement across the entire front line. Moscow insisted that halting forced mobilization in Ukraine and preventing the rearmament of its military were essential preconditions for an effective ceasefire. Additionally, Russia cited past instances of Ukraine undermining agreements and pointed to recent terrorist attacks by Ukrainian militants targeting civilians in Russia’s Kursk region as a major concern.

A significant aspect of the conversation revolved around foreign military aid to Ukraine. The Russian side maintained that the cessation of Western military support and intelligence sharing with Kyiv was a crucial factor in preventing further escalation.
