Zuckerberg unveils Meta superintelligence labs to chase the future of AI

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the formation of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a newly consolidated division within the tech giant tasked with developing artificial intelligence systems that go beyond human-level intelligence. The June 30 announcement marks a bold and high-stakes move in the intensifying global race for AI supremacy.

According to Zuckerberg, the creation of MSL represents a “historic turning point” not just for Meta, but for the future of technology and society. “As the pace of AI progress accelerates, developing superintelligence is coming into sight,” he wrote in an internal memo to staff. “I believe this will be the beginning of a new era for humanity, and I am fully committed to doing what it takes for Meta to lead the way.”

The new lab consolidates Meta’s existing AI research divisions, including its Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) group and product-focused AI teams, under a single umbrella. The goal: to build what Zuckerberg calls “personal superintelligence for everyone” – a form of artificial general intelligence (AGI) that is not only smarter than humans in specific domains but also broadly capable across a range of tasks.

The lab will be led by Alexandr Wang, the 28-year-old wunderkind and founder of data-labeling firm Scale AI. Wang joins Meta as its Chief AI Officer, bringing with him not just deep technical expertise, but also one of Silicon Valley’s most coveted startups.
