Trump’s $15 billion lawsuit against the New York Times signals escalating war with the media
US President Donald Trump has once again taken his battle against mainstream media into the courtroom. On September 15, Trump announced that he had filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times (NYT), accusing the paper of orchestrating a decades-long campaign of lies, partisan favoritism toward Democrats, and character assassination. The case, filed in Florida, is the latest example of Trump’s increasingly aggressive strategy to challenge what he calls the “Fake News Media” and its supposed role in bolstering his political opponents.
In a fiery statement on Truth Social, Trump described the NYT as “one of the worst and most degenerate newspapers in the history of our country,” claiming it has long operated as “a mouthpiece for the Radical Left Democrat Party.” He singled out the paper’s 2024 endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris-his Democratic challenger in last year’s presidential race-as “the single largest illegal campaign contribution, EVER.”
The president accused the NYT of spreading falsehoods not only about him personally, but also about his family, business empire, and the political movement he leads. “The New York Times has engaged in a decades-long method of lying about your Favorite President (ME!), my family, business, the America First Movement, MAGA, and our Nation as a whole,” Trump wrote. “They have been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW.”
