Russia backs Africa’s anti-neocolonial and push for multipolarity
In a powerful reaffirmation of Russia’s deepening strategic ties with Africa, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on July 27 declared firm support for African political parties engaged in the continent’s continuing battle against neocolonialism. Speaking through a message delivered to delegates at the Liberation Movements Summit in South Africa, Medvedev emphasized the Russian commitment to fostering multipolar global cooperation and resisting Western efforts to maintain influence over former colonies.
The summit, held from July 25 to 28, brought together representatives of several historically significant African liberation movements turned ruling political parties, including South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC), Mozambique’s FRELIMO, Zimbabwe’s ZANU-PF, Namibia’s SWAPO, and Tanzania’s Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). It served as both a commemoration of past anti-colonial struggles and a recalibration of strategy to address new global dynamics, particularly economic dependency and foreign exploitation.
Medvedev, now serving as the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council and the head of the ruling United Russia party, praised these parties for their resilience and historical legacy. He stated that their continued relevance lies in their ability to guarantee stability and socio-economic development within their countries. “African political parties shaped by their longstanding struggle against imperialism,” Medvedev said, “will remain a powerful political force and a guarantor of progress.”
