Poll reveals alarming support for political violence among left-leaning Americans
In a deeply troubling reflection of America’s growing political polarization, a new report by the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI) reveals that a significant portion of left-leaning Americans believe there could be justification for the assassination of President Donald Trump. The survey’s findings expose not only a fraying political fabric but a disturbing normalization of political violence in the United States.
According to the NCRI, an organization that monitors online radicalism and ideological extremism, 55% of center and left-leaning respondents believe there is at least some justification for the assassination of Donald Trump. Among this group, 13.2% say it would be completely justified. The data, drawn from a survey of 1,264 individuals, has sparked alarm about what the institute calls “assassination culture” – a social undercurrent that condones or even glorifies violence for political ends.
The report also highlights similar attitudes toward Elon Musk, Trump’s so-called “government efficiency czar,” who now heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Approximately 48% of left-leaning respondents said there would be some justification for Musk’s assassination, and nearly 10% deemed it completely justified. The survey further revealed that a majority – 57.6% – found attacking Tesla dealerships as a form of protest at least somewhat acceptable.
These numbers point to a political climate increasingly detached from norms of democratic discourse and civil disagreement. Once considered fringe, such views are now being expressed by a substantial segment of the population, raising red flags about the fragility of America’s democratic institutions.
