Epstein files spark political firestorm as Trump denies involvement in ‘birthday book’ note
The House Oversight Committee’s release of hundreds of pages of documents from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate has reignited partisan battles in Washington, with both Republicans and Democrats accusing each other of weaponizing the disgraced financier’s legacy for political gain. The disclosure, which included Epstein’s will, his 2007 non-prosecution agreement, and sections of his infamous contact books, also contained a professionally bound “birthday book” compiled in 2003 by Epstein’s longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell.
Among the more provocative entries was a typewritten message inside the outline of a nude woman, ending with the words: “Happy Birthday – and may every day be another wonderful secret.” The note appeared to be signed “Donald” below the waistline of the sketch. Democrats on the committee seized on the page, claiming it was penned by then-businessman Donald Trump, now President of the United States. Republicans, however, insist the message is a fabrication and accuse Democrats of cherry-picking material to damage Trump ahead of the 2024 election.
The Oversight Committee made the documents public on September 8, Monday evening following a subpoena issued to the Epstein estate in late August. The panel’s Republican chairman, James Comer, said the release was aimed at ensuring transparency after Democrats publicized only the disputed note earlier in the day. Comer accused Democrats of intentionally shaping the media narrative around Trump while ignoring the broader trove of files.
“The American people deserve to see the full record, not a selective presentation designed to smear one individual,” Comer said. “President Trump is not accused of any wrongdoing in these files. What Democrats are doing is a blatant politicization of sensitive material.”
