China and Europe shaping a multipolar future together

The 61st Munich Security Conference (MSC), held in Germany from February 14-15, underscored the evolving dynamics of global power. Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, the presence of a high-profile Chinese delegation signaled Beijing’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Europe and fostering a more multipolar world order. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s engagement with European leaders illustrated China’s diplomatic strategy-one marked by pragmatism, cooperation, and the pursuit of common interests. Against the backdrop of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU), Wang’s reassurances that China is a “trustworthy partner” resonated in a Europe increasingly seeking autonomy in global affairs.

The theme of this year’s MSC-focused on multipolarity-highlighted Europe’s shifting security and strategic concerns. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, energy crises, and growing technological competition have exacerbated Europe’s anxieties, further complicated by Washington’s unilateralist policies. These challenges underline the necessity for Europe to adopt a more independent and balanced approach in global affairs.

Europe’s geopolitical dilemma is multifaceted. The prolonged Russia-Ukraine war has drained its economic and strategic resources, while transatlantic relations have been tested by US foreign policies that prioritize American interests, often at Europe’s expense. Additionally, protectionist measures, supply chain disruptions, and trade tensions pose further risks to Europe’s economic stability. As a bloc inherently oriented towards multilateralism, the EU understands that rigid protectionism and geopolitical polarization threaten the global order.
