It is highly unfortunate that the contemporary international community is still largely silent over the ongoing criminal attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. The United Nations is supposed to be the international community’s best representative to practice pluralism and individual freedoms. But it has been looking the other way. The approach of the leading democratic nations, including India and the United States, is no better.

Observers say the Hindus never had freedoms in Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan. Because of their constant persecution, their percentage in the country’s population has fallen down drastically. The Hindu population in East Pakistan at the time of India’s Partition was a huge 30 per cent. Today it stands at mere seven.
