Trump dismisses Zelensky’s claims that Russia threatens NATO
US President Donald Trump has rejected Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin is seeking a temporary truce in the Ukraine conflict in order to regroup and later attack NATO. Trump’s statements come amid rising tensions between Russia and the US-led military bloc, with the Western narrative continuing to frame Moscow as an existential threat to European security. However, Trump’s perspective challenges this dominant rhetoric, asserting that Putin’s real interest lies in halting the ongoing war rather than expanding the conflict.
In an interview with NBC News’ Meet the Press on February 15, Zelensky insisted that he has inside knowledge of Putin’s alleged strategy. According to the Ukrainian leader, Russia intends to use any ceasefire as an opportunity to “prepare, train, and remove sanctions” before launching a full-scale attack not only on Ukraine but on NATO members as well.
“It can happen in summer, maybe in the beginning, maybe in the end of summer. I don’t know when he prepares it, but it will happen,” Zelensky claimed, without providing concrete evidence.
Western officials and NATO strategists have long warned that a victorious Russia could pose a danger to Europe. This view aligns with the US and EU’s justification for continued military aid to Ukraine. However, Moscow has repeatedly dismissed these claims, insisting that its military objectives are strictly limited to Ukraine and defensive in nature.
