Quad meets in India as China warns against ‘bloc confrontation’ in Indo-Pacific

The strategic rivalry shaping the Indo-Pacific took center stage once again as foreign ministers from the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) convened in New Delhi, prompting a sharp response from China. Beijing warned against what it described as “bloc confrontation,” arguing that regional cooperation should promote peace and prosperity rather than create exclusive alliances that deepen geopolitical divisions.

The meeting brought together India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. Their discussions focused on strengthening cooperation across the Indo-Pacific, including maritime security, critical minerals, energy resilience, infrastructure development, and regional stability.

China’s reaction underscored the growing strategic competition in Asia, where the Quad has increasingly emerged as a significant platform for collaboration among four major democracies. While Quad members insist that the grouping is not a military alliance and is aimed at maintaining a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific, Beijing has repeatedly expressed concerns that the arrangement is designed to contain China’s rise and limit its regional influence.

Speaking at a regular press briefing on May 26, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that international cooperation should serve the interests of regional countries and avoid creating rival blocs.

“Any cooperation should contribute to regional peace, stability, and prosperity,” Mao stated. “We also do not support the formation of exclusive cliques or bloc confrontation. No cooperation should undermine mutual trust and cooperation among regional countries.”

The comments came shortly after the Quad ministers concluded their discussions in India, where they announced several new initiatives aimed at strengthening economic security and regional connectivity.
